It’s no wonder that more and more people are seeking a career as a pet groomer. The question, therefore, is how can you make yourself stand out in this evolving market?
Getting started as a pet groomer can vary depending on the initial route you take, 6- 10 weeks in an apprenticeship program or 2-18 weeks in a state approved grooming school². However, there’s something extra you can do to really show your clients that you mean business; become a National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG). Obtaining this certificate will not only allow you to advance your knowledge and skills but it will really highlight to your clients that you have a stellar knowledge and understanding of the industry. Ultimately pet parents want to be assured that their groomer really does know what is best for their fur baby, becoming a NCMG is the perfect way to grow your reputation and your business.
The NCMG is arguably the most prestigious certificate a pet groomer can obtain. Not only does it show dedication to the profession, it also offers the opportunity to delve deep into the industry. This certificate can give your clients the extra assurance that you have more to offer³, which is ultimately what you’ll need to be able to grow your business and really set yourself apart. Most importantly, it signals that you are dedicated to learning and growing in this industry, particularly since education continues well beyond receiving the graduation⁴.
Many pet groomers who make the decision to become a National Certified Master Groomer do so through the NDGAA (National Dog Groomers Association of America). To qualify for NDGAA board certification, groomers have to take two major exams, after attending a series of lectures and hands-on demonstrations. If they fail one of these exams they will not be granted board certification. Only once all exams have been passed can a groomer pursue a certificate to become a NCMG.
