The right pup for you based on your personality or lifestyle.
Whether you’d like to adopt (which we’ll always recommend) or use a breeder, it’s important to find the most compatible breed for your lifestyle and living situation. This decision can make the difference in yours and your pups true happiness.
This is why we decided to create Saturday Superlatives aimed at helping you find the right type of dog for you. It’s essential to be honest with yourself when asking yourself key questions like “where do you live?” or “what’s your regular activity level?” when deciding which dog breed is a perfect match for you. So here we go!
French Bulldogs have become one of the top dog breeds in today’s society. In fact, [The American Kennel Club (AKC) issues the ranking of dog breeds according to their popularity, and the French Bulldog is currently ranked in 2nd].
French bulldogs are often confused with the English Bulldog. But there are differences: Frenchies are more high-energy than their English counterparts, and they tend to be more of a “people dog.” They are known to be one of the most affectionate breeds looking for lots of love and Cuddles!
Thinking of owning a French Bulldog yourself? Here’s a list of personality traits or lifestyle traits we think would be ideal for hooman mom & dad’s of these small dogs to have.
- Most nights for you are about winding down and relaxing with a good ol’ Netflix series binge-watch🍿
- You enjoy a brisk walk around the neighborhood or laying around at your local park. Frenchie’s make great lapdogs more than an ideal jogging partner. So if you’re more on the active side, and love a good sweat… maybe consider a breed that can keep up with your active lifestyle!
- Minimum or basic grooming is good enough for these smooth-coated dogs. An occasional weekly brushing will do, especially during the spring or fall (when they shed the most). French bulldogs keep primarily clean on their own. Lots of pet parents have said that they find their Frenchie’s trying to avoid puddles or muddy areas.
- Motivated by food (aren’t we all?), these pups are smart and easily taught, especially when there’s some sort of food bribing going on. So if you want a dog that can be trained with basic manners, here’s a good one!
- That being said, these little four-legged friends can be known to be notoriously stubborn. Their *sometimes* lazy nature can cause them to suffer from “selective hearing”. We find this more funny than anything else. 🤣 So patience is definitely a virtue in moments like these.
- Live in an apartment? French bulldogs are a GREAT choice for apartment residents.
Can you relate?
*Keep in mind these topics are researched from what we consider credible media sources. We draw our own perspectives based on our experience with these breeds, and what we read or research via interviews from dog owners themselves. We’d always recommend you do your own research, and make your own decision based on what you think is best for you.
Some more fun facts about French Bulldogs:
- This breed often suffers from Brachycephalic syndrome. A pathological condition affecting short nosed dogs and cats which can lead to severe respiratory distress. (link) Because of this they often struggle to regulate their body temperature. Much cool down periods are needed for these pups.
- According to Mental Floss, French bulldogs don’t make very good swimmers. So be on high alert if you have a pool in your backyard!
- While their origin isn’t originally from France as some might think, they initially derive from Britain’s native Bulldog, eventually finding their way to northern France. Oui, Oui!
Their lifespan averages anywhere between 10 to 12 years.

A message from a French Bulldog pet parent:

My French Bulldog, Manolo, was the best dog of all time. He made me laugh every single day with his stubborn, yet nonchalant ways. Always peeking over at me with his side eyes to make sure I haven’t gone too far, Manolo loved knowing I was around even though he pretended not to. He had an amazing personality and was a wonderful addition to our family. While my days with my baby Frenchie is now part of the past, they were definitely some of the most magical times of my life. I hope to find another one just like him one day.
